,   Thursday, 26 March 2015
The North York Moors is a special place, protected as a National Park for everyone to enjoy.

There is a great diversity of landscapes, with wide sweeps of open heather moorland, distinctive dales, valley's and dramatic headlands and hill sides. There is an abundance of forest and ancient woodlands, that are rich in wildlife.

This special habitat with the plants and animals it supports, is of national and international importance. An area of 44,000 hectares of moorland has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its heathland habitat and breeding birds.

The North Yorkshire Moors National Park has one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK. Around 70 percent of the world's heather moorland is in the UK and the largest continuous expanse of moorland in England and Wales is here in the Yorkshire Moors.

The Yorkshire Moors has over 1,400 miles of paths and tracks to choose from, which is great if you enjoy walking, cycling or horse riding.

The Yorkshire Moors is not just about the countryside, there stunning coastal cliffs, sheltered harbours and a rugged coast line. In the UK the most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of coast have been given special status known as 'Heritage Coasts' to ensure they are cared for by local authorities and government agencies.

The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast is a fascinating area to explore, 36 miles long and stretches from Saltburn down to Scalby Mills near Scarborough.

The North York Moors has it all, from pretty villages to stately homes, mighty abbeys to historical museums and of course the spectacular landscapes and dramatic coast line, where you can just stop and stare at the unforgettable views.
